Symptoms
The initial symptoms of smallpox are: fever, muscle pain, malaise, headache, and prostration. After about 12 days, the first obvious symptoms of smallpox appear. Reddish spots on the mouth and throat called enanthem appear. After the enanthem appear, a rash develops on the skin. By the second day of the rash, papules form and by the fourth day they fill with a opalescent fluid to become vesicles. By the seventh day the vesicles become pustules and they soon become larger. By the second week the liquid oozes out and they deflate to become scabs. After that they start to flake off, leaving depigmented scars.
